Necessity and advantages of antifreeze 

Antifreeze, also known as radiator antifreeze, is a liquid that is used in vehicles and other machines with combustion engines to protect the cooling systems of petrol and diesel engines against icing. At the same time, the use of antifreeze prevents possible limescale deposits and rust formation. Antifreeze can be used in a cooling system all year round. Here are some reasons why antifreeze is important:

  • Prevents freezing: In cold environments, water can freeze in an engine's cooling system. This could lead to serious damage as frozen water expands and can cause cracks in the engine block and other components.
  • Increases the boiling point: Antifreeze increases the boiling point of water. This is important as a cooling system can heat up due to pressure and temperature. A higher boiling point helps to prevent the engine from overheating.
  • Prevents corrosion: Modern antifreezes also contain anti-corrosion agents that help keep the cooling system free of rust and other deposits. Corrosion could impair the efficiency of the cooling system and lead to serious damage.
  • Protects seals and hoses: Antifreeze helps to keep the seals and hoses in the cooling system elastic, which extends their service life.
  • Improves heat transfer: Antifreeze is often better than plain water at transferring heat. This means that the engine is cooled more efficiently, which in turn improves performance and service life.


Antifreezes are formulated to be compatible with different materials that make up the cooling system (e.g. aluminium, copper, plastic). It is important to use the correct antifreeze for the type of vehicle and the prevailing weather conditions. Please also observe the recommended mixing ratios to ensure optimum performance. Important note: SEL® antifreeze is not available from stock as standard, but is definitely available on request!
